Must-Haves for Hurricane Preparation

If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, being prepared is something that you should be considering in the event that one strikes your area. For many people that have lived in the area for a while, this may be considered common sense. However, if you are new to the area, you may also be new to the concept of hurricane protection. Here are some things that can help you get started in preparing.

The first thing that you should consider doing is preparing a hurricane plan. This is a basic plan of what you should do to prepare for the hurricane before it strikes, what to do during it and how you will recover after it is over. Have an idea of where you will go if your home gets ruined, and make sure that you have gathered the necessary supplies.

The next step is to gather the items that you will need in the event of a hurricane. These items should be included in your hurricane plan, and you should set aside a special place for them, such as a closet. These items can include bottled water, canned food and some cash and/or credit cards kept safe in plastic baggies to prevent them from getting soaked in the storm. A first aid kit is also recommended in case someone gets injured escaping the storm. These are just a few of the hurricane protection items that you should be considering in your storage area.

As a storm approaches, you may want to make sure that you have an evacuation plan, not only for yourself and your family but also for your pets. Locate pet-friendly shelters in your area and look into getting phone apps to notify people where you are and if you are safe once the storm hits.

There are a lot of things to do in preparation of a hurricane, and they should all be considered crucial steps in hurricane protection. Make sure that you are preparing yourself and your family well in advance if you are at risk.
