Replacement Window Options

March 7, 2018

Choosing replacement windows for your home can be quite a challenge. It seems that there are so many companies working to get your business and all claiming they have the best product. There are wood windows, metal windows, fiberglass windows, vinyl windows and more. So, how do you know which option is the best for you?

There are advantages and disadvantages to all types of windows. Wood looks classic and will cost you a pretty penny. If you live in an older home, wood is likely what you are replacing. You can probably see, from looking at your old windows that the biggest disadvantage to wood windows is that the wood swells with temperature changes, requires regular maintenance and will eventually rot and need replacement.

Metal/aluminum windows were popular for several years, but are not as popular now. The aluminum tends to conduct cold and warm temperatures more than other materials causing energy loss and creating an environment for mold and moisture damage inside the home. While it is still possible to find these windows, they are not necessarily the best option.

Fiberglass windows are great! Unfortunately, the price tag is often reflective of this. While they are durable, look beautiful and are very energy efficient, they often cost more than twice as much as other window products, making them out of reach for many budgets.

Vinyl windows are low maintenance, budget friendly, energy efficient and will last for many years. If you make a list of pros and cons of each window type, you will likely find that vinyl has far more pros than cons and their benefits outweigh those of other windows. They come in a variety of colors and styles, perform well in both hot and cold climates and won’t break the bank to install.

While there are many options available to replace your windows and improve the appearance and energy efficiency of your home, vinyl windows seem to have all of the benefits without the extremely high cost.
